DIY - Swimsuit oops to functional

My second to last IG purchase was two swimsuits. One is black and the other white and also subject of this post. When I saw the add they both stood out so I clicked. For some time I have wanted a sexy one piece swimsuit. It may sound easy. Many sexy sexy styles are loaded with straps or criss crossing design which not only makes them hard to put on, but ends with freaky tan lines.

So back to IG and a side note. I am not sure why I keep buying things that are advertised on there as so far none have turned out to be what they seem. Let’s visit the black suit for a moment. It fit great and I threw it on with loads of confidence to a friends party this Memorial Day. Photos here so you can see the style. Don’t mind the IG selfie with Clinique product demo.

We lounged for a bit. Sun heated up my black suit so I was forced to hit the pool to cool off. Splish splash, some fun with friends and back on land to tan my legs. I dried off a bit and grabbed some sunscreen to re-apply when I suddenly saw purple all over my thighs. It was very light and streaky like and I seriously panicked in that moment, thinking I have serious spider vain issues. Yes I know, but it looked just like varicose veins. Rational thought prevailed and then it became clear that my quality IG swimsuit was causing the streaks. Black fabric started bleeding and staining everything. It was doing it dry as well but I had not noticed. Inside of my swim shorts was all purple and stained. When I got home, I washed the suit in cold water with detergent and rinsed in 4 cold water rinses before color stopped bleeding.

Sooo, now we move to the white suit and this post. Remember I wanted a sexy suit and in looking at it on, it sure is. Let me just say that I NEVER wear anything low cut clothes wise, so why I though this would be different is beyond me. I guess we are already half naked in swimwear anyway, what’s a plunging neck line.

WHITE SWIMSUIT - DIY

The suit fits as you can see, but boobs to hold it in place are sold separately. When I bent over total nip slip both ways. I was laughing so hard at home when it happened. I almost just packed it for my trip to Vegas without trying it on, but after black suit mess, I felt it was a good idea. Gee was it ever. No matter how I adjusted the straps, I could not get my girls to remain inside this suit. Well maybe a bigger size would do it? But we know how suits stretch with wash and wear so I knew that was not it. In order to make this work I turned to an old bikini top I was about to take out of beach circulation, and came up with a way to re-purpose my old to make the new functional.

PROCESS AND MATERIALS

I took straps from old bikini top and began the design phase. Finally I settled on using both straps in a criss cross pattern and leaving some length on top and Botton of each strap to tie. I pinned the straps to inside of my one piece and tried it on until I nailed the fit. Since this has to last through wash and wear I thought it best to machine sew. Each side has a stitch at top and Botton of the X for total of 4 stitch lines. Since that would show I used some large sequins that shed off one of my Holiday tops. Those I sewed on by hand and done

RESULT

White, still sexy one piece swimsuit I can wear without flashing anyone. Even though this story ended well and my $40 spend was saved by being crafty, let’s not forget to lesson. Ads on IG should be researched before making a purchase. Something I learned, not then but after my last purchase that I am embarrassed to even admit….The Goat Case. (UGH)

One of my favorite things to do is re-purpose things I already own and to see the bikini top which was a DIY become another DIY was satisfying. Bikini top was an Old Navy find on clearance , but it had a weird seem in the middle. To cover up the seem I used an old embellishment I had laying around from something I can’t remember. Originally I was going to use the jewel in the middle of my one piece, but it is heavy and hadn't sewing was not going to keep it in place for long.

TIP:

If you find items on clearance that you like but you are not sure. Think of how you could make them what you want them to be. Can you transform them with something you have or inexpensive add on? When about to donate or throw something away, think if it could serve another purpose being something else. Works for me, saves me money and keeps my creative juices flowing. Like bikini top in this pic providing my straps.
